Stock & Stewardship
What keeps the animals, the land, and the whole shebang going.
The animals don't care what's on my to do list. Good thing we've got the right tools for both.
The coop doesn't take days off. Neither does the apiary. Or the hundred-pound dog. This is everything we rely on to keep the animals fed, the hives healthy, and the operation running without us having to be out there every single minute. We're still dialing it in.
But these tools are making that a whole lot easier.
Ring Spotlight Camera
Faces the coop. I check it from anywhere and I've caught more than one thing lurking around at dusk that I wouldn't have known about otherwise.
Shop on AmazonChick Brooder Heating Plate
Adjustable height as the chicks grow, and it runs cool enough that I'm not worried about fire. The girls huddle under it exactly like they would a hen.
Shop on AmazonChicken Waterer with Auto-Fill Cups
Two gallon capacity with four cups and four horizontal nipples. BPA-free and large enough that I'm not refilling it every day. It's super handy with new chicks or when I need to use my separate coop.
Shop on AmazonDIY Chicken Feeder Port Kit
This is what we use to convert a bucket into a gravity feeder. Four ports, rain-proof design, and the feed stays dry. I drilled the holes myself and it took about twenty minutes.
Shop on AmazonAutomatic Waterer Cups (5 Pack)
These are the orange horizontal nipple cups we use on the waterer setup. Snap on, stay clean, and the flock figured them out fast.
Shop on AmazonFloat Valve Kit for Automatic Water Fill
Keeps the waterer topped off without me having to think about it. Works on chicken waterers, animal troughs, anything with a tank. Set it once and it handles itself.
Shop on AmazonAutomatic Treadle Feeder
The flock steps on the treadle to open the lid. Keeps wild birds and rodents out of the feed. Forty pound capacity means I'm not out there refilling it every other day.
Shop on AmazonAutomatic Chicken Coop Door
Battery powered, app controlled, and it opens and closes on a timer. I sleep better knowing the girls are locked in without me having to remember to do it every night.
Shop on AmazonPine Shavings for Coop Bedding
Low dust, absorbent, and they do something about the smell. We use these in the coop as part of the deep-litter method.
Shop on AmazonHardware Cloth (48 x 50 ft)
Quarter-inch galvanized mesh. This is what actually keeps predators out. Chicken wire keeps chickens in. Hardware cloth keeps everything else out. Not the same thing.
Shop on AmazonMetal Coop Scoop
Long handle, deep shovel, foam grip. I use a cat litter scoop in the coop and I'm not embarrassed about it. It works better than anything marketed specifically for chickens.
Shop on AmazonComplete Beehive Starter Kit (4 Box)
When I was ready to expand from 1 to 3 hives, this is what I chose to get the biggest bang for the buck. Two deep boxes and two medium boxes, frames and foundation included. If you're setting up your first hive and want everything in one order, this is a solid place to land.
Shop on AmazonBee Suit with Gloves and Veil
Full coverage, ventilated, and it comes with gloves and two veils. I don't go near the hives without it.
Shop on AmazonFrame Feeders for Hives (4 Pack)
These go inside the hive and hold the sugar syrup while the girls need supplemental feed. Cleaner than open feeding and less likely to invite trouble.
Shop on AmazonMultipurpose Hive Tool
Seven functions on one tool. I reach for it every single inspection. If you're keeping bees, you need a good hive tool before you need almost anything else.
Shop on AmazonJ-Hook Hive Tool
The J-hook style is better for prying up frames without disturbing the rest of the box. I keep both this and the multipurpose tool in my kit.
Shop on AmazonDeep Hive Frames with Wax Foundation, Black (10 Pack)
Same solid frame, black foundation. Some beekeepers prefer black because eggs are easier to spot. Worth having both on hand when you're starting out.
Shop on AmazonDeep Hive Frames with Wax Foundation, Natural (10 Pack)
Unassembled frames with wax foundation. This is what goes inside the brood box. We use these in all three hives.
Shop on AmazonVarroa Mite Checker
Mite counts are the one thing you can't skip. This checker makes the alcohol wash method straightforward. I test regularly and I'd rather catch a problem early than lose a hive over it.
Shop on AmazonCrockpot for Wax Rendering
I dedicate one slow cooker entirely to wax. It melts burr comb, old frames, and anything else that comes out of the hive. Do not use this one for dinner afterward.
Shop on AmazonBee Toolkit
Everything you need to get started in one kit. If you're new to beekeeping and don't want to piece it together yourself, this covers the basics without overcomplicating it.
